An aerobic septic system uses oxygen and mechanical aeration to treat wastewater more thoroughly than a conventional tank, then sprays the treated effluent over a lawn, a design that’s common across Tennessee on lots with poor-draining soils.
How it’s different from a conventional system
A conventional septic system relies on anaerobic (no-oxygen) bacteria and lets liquid soak away through a buried drain field. An aerobic system adds an aerator to introduce oxygen, treats the water to a cleaner standard, and then sprays it above ground rather than relying solely on soil absorption.
The parts of an aerobic system
- Trash/pre-treatment tank to settle solids.
- Aeration chamber where an aerator adds oxygen.
- Pump tank and spray heads that disperse treated effluent.
- Control panel and alarm that warn you of problems.
Do you have one?
If you have sprinkler-style heads fed by your septic, a control panel with an alarm, or a required maintenance contract, you almost certainly have an aerobic system, and Tennessee requires regular professional maintenance to keep it running and compliant. See our aerobic system service.
